If you’ve got a nice budget, I’d advise you to buy the game set, however, if you don’t have this money, don’t worry. Every time they roll the dice they’ll have to say the numbers, everytime they pay the rent of an asset on the game they’ll have to ask prices and the owner will have to give the prices, you can even prepare Flashcards with the set of questions for them to follow as a controlled practice. Imagine you are working with numbers and teaching them how to ask and give prices, the game fits perfectly. So, how could you use this game in your Business English classes?ĭon’t put the board on table just because it’s fun, think how your aims fit the activity, is it a grammar activity? Is it a vocabulary activity? Many of my Business English students had to work with negotiations, retails, accounting and budget management, the game incorporates all these skills! You’ll have students more engaged, once you are offering a activity with Speaking, Reading, and visual appeal, your Knaestheic students will love that!! However, think about 1 hour class where all your students are sat around the board with their cards, playing with money and also practicing the target language you selected for the lesson. When it comes to Business English classes, usually, they get too serious, and we should respect that, given the issue we’re talking about, the environment – Most of the time I taught Business English it was In Company modality – and also because we’re almost always running against time. I think that Monopoly is a nice game for Business English class, and I’m going explain you why! Have you taught them places in the city, like supermarket, bank, hospital etc? You can put these places on board and they’ll practice repeating it along the game.īut keep in mind: Don’t use them as presentation of New content neither as fillers ! Prepare your class and use it as a practice activity! Have you taught them numbers? You can use Monopoly as a practice activity which they will have to use numbers for all the calculations throughout the game. One thing I really like about using this game in class, is the broad range and variety of things you can do to practice vocabulary. The goal is basically to collect rent from opponents until you drive them into bankruptcy. Researching a little about the best board games in History and the most used in English classes, I found Scrabble ( which by the way you can find here my post about it) and Monopoly!įor those who never heard about or never played Monopoly before, it’s a game created by Elizabeth Magie in 1904 intended to teach Henry George’s theory about the danger of land monopolies, It was called Landlord’s Game, and after designed by Charles Darow, nowadays it is produced by Hasbro. I know, funny classes are awesome, but look, they’re still classes! I don’t like the idea of using a game in classroom just for fun without any real purpose behind it. Lately I’ve been reflecting a lot about the usage of games in English teaching, how can we use it, how can we build our games, how useful they might be.
